Mahima Chowdhary says earlier filmmakers wanted ‘virgin actresses who didn’t kiss’

New Delhi: Bollywood actress Mahima Chaudhary made her acting debut in 1997 with the film ‘Pardes’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Before venturing into films, the actress starred in several commercials and a few modeling assignments.

Mahima has delivered some powerful performances in her career with films like ‘Dhadkan’, ‘Daag’, ‘Lajja’ and others. After spending decades in the industry, Mahima Chowdhary has finally spoken out loud about the industry in one of her interviews with Hindustan Times.

Mahima didn’t shy away from speaking her mind and said that the film industry was ‘far more male dominated’ than it is now. He further said that today’s generation of actresses are also doing ‘calling the shots’. The publication quoted the ‘Lajja’ actress as saying, “I think the industry is reaching a stage where women actors are also working. They get better portions, better pay, advertisements, they are a great and a lot. Are in powerful condition. They have a longer shelf life than before.”

The ‘Pardes’ actress further revealed during her conversation that in her earlier days in the industry, the relationship status of an actress affected her career as well. Mahima told Hindustan Times, “The moment you start dating someone, people turn you down because they only wanted a virgin who didn’t kiss. If you were dating someone, it was like , ‘Oh! She’s dating!’ If you were married, forget it, your career was over, and if you had kids, it was absolutely over.”

Speaking about the then leading actors of the Hindi film industry, Mahima recalls that the relationship status of a hero did not affect her career. He further added, “Even when Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak came, we didn’t know that he was married, even for Govinda. People didn’t show pictures of their kids or expose them because it would make their age Was revealed! All these things have really changed between now.”

Mahima Choudhary also highlighted the fact that nowadays audiences are accepting women in a wide variety of roles and their relationship status is making their professional life the least disturbing.
