New Delhi: Amid the dwindling number of daily Covid-19 cases, Maharashtra will today (January 24, 2022) reopen schools for classes 1 to 9 for offline class sessions.
Schools in the state were closed in the first week of January in the wake of the rise in coronavirus cases and the emergence of the Omron variant.
“Our SOPs are very strict and clear. We have given four days advance notice to the management of the schools to prepare the schedule for vaccination and sanitisation. Timings and other necessary decisions will be taken by the local authorities, depending on the local conditions like as District Collector or Municipal Commissioner.” Maharashtra minister Varsha Gaikwad, while announcing the decision on January 20, had said ,
In Mumbai, the local civic body had announced the closure of schools for classes 1 to 9 till January 31. However, an assessment by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) indicated that cases of omicron infection were not increasing, and said that the curve was flattening. This prompted officials to propose reopening schools for physical presence.
However, in cities such as Pune and Aurangabad, schools will remain closed while classes will continue in online mode due to the current COVID-19 situation.
Most of the parents in Maharashtra are not willing to send their children to school
Nearly 62 percent of parents surveyed in Maharashtra are unwilling to send their children to school from January 24. The findings were based on a survey conducted by online community platform LocalCircle in Tier-I, Tier-II/III and Tier-IV cities. The state which got 4,976 responses.
The survey revealed that out of the total respondents, 67 percent were men and the remaining 33 percent were women.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope has said that the decision to reopen primary classes from Monday to class 12 was taken after considering the issue thoroughly.
Talking to reporters on Sunday, Tope said that opening of schools is necessary for the brain development of children and keeping them at home for a long time is not right.
“We have given a lot of flexibility and have also emphasized that it is necessary to follow the COVID-19 norms,” the minister said. Parents should send their children to school.
While there has been an increase in Covid-19 cases in the last few days, 90-95 per cent oxygen and ICU beds are empty, he said, adding that restrictions would be eased if hospitalization rates remain low.
The minister also informed that 90 per cent of the eligible beneficiaries in the state have taken the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while the coverage of the second dose is in the range of 62-63 per cent.
However, he added that many people had skipped their second dose of vaccine and health workers were trying their best to hesitate the clause.
Maharashtra sees 40,805 Kovid-19 cases, 44 deaths
Maharashtra on Sunday reported 40,805 Covid-19 cases, taking its tally to 75,07,225, while 44 fatalities took the toll to 1,42,115. With 27,377 people being discharged during the day, the number of cured people increased to 70,67,955 and there were 2,93,305 active coronavirus infections in the state.
No omicron cases were detected in the state during the day, taking the number of people affected by the new variant to 2,759, of whom 1,437 were discharged. He said that the total number of omicron cases in Mumbai is 1,009 and in Pune city is 1,002.
Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 2,550 new cases and 13 deaths on Sunday, taking the number of infected to 10,33,915 and the toll to 16,535.
The Mumbai division, which includes adjoining districts, saw 6,665 cases and 21 deaths, taking the tally to 21,79,271 and the toll to 36,416.
The Nashik division reported 4,777 cases, while the Pune division saw 15,166 cases, including 6,284 in Pune city and 4,085 in Pimpri Chinchwad.
