Nagpur: Gadchiroli Police on Friday detained ‘prominent leaders’Thiya andolanin Etapalli South Gadchiroli And drove the villagers gathered on the spot.
The police detained senior members of the Zilla Parishad, Sainu Gota, Sheela Gota, activists Ramdas Jarate, Nitin Pada, Amol Markwar and others at around 5 am.
The protesters had gathered at Etapalli on October 25 for a march against the leasing out of the Surjagarh iron ore mining project and other mines in the backward district. Since then about 300 people have been camping at the site.
Although the Minister of State won vadettiwar had decided to lead the protest but did not show up later.
Party colleagues and senior leaders of Gadchiroli had said that Vadettiwar was engaged elsewhere.
Edav Lalsu Narote, who is also a Zilla Parishad member, had left earlier and could not be detained.
Gadchiroli SP Ankit Goel had resorted to action after talks between the protesters and Collector Sanjay Meena failed a day earlier.
Senior police officials are yet to make any official statement as the situation in the district is tense.
