Maharashtra MLC election results: 2 candidates each from ruling ally NCP, Shiv Sena; 4 victories of BJP

Maharashtra MLC Elections: Four candidates of the ruling Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra won the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections on Monday, officials said. Four BJP candidates also won.

The winning candidates are Sachin Ahir and Amshya Padvi of Shiv Sena. NCP’s Eknath Khadse and Ramraje Nimbalkar also won.

BJP’s Shrikant Bharti, Praveen Darekar, Uma Khapre and Ram Shinde were also declared winners in the MLC elections.

Who fielded whom?

The NCP has fielded Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar and former minister Eknath Khadse, who quit the BJP to join the Sharad Pawar-led party. Shiv Sena has fielded party functionaries Sachin Ahir and Amshya Padvi from tribal-dominated Nandurbar district.

The Congress has fielded Mumbai Congress President Bhai Jagtap and former minister Chandrakant Handore. The BJP has again given tickets to outgoing MLCs Darekar and Lad and has given tickets to Ram Shinde, Uma Khapre and Shrikant Bhartiya.

The legislators of the state form the electoral college for the MLC elections.

The effective strength of the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly came down to 285 after the death of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke, while two NCP MLAs – Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh – are currently in jail and not allowed to vote by the High Court.
