On Sunday, around 2,000 vehicles going to Karnataka, including trucks, were stranded on the national highway, the district police was quoted as saying by PTI. The highway has been closed for traffic since Friday after a part of the highway was submerged due to rising water level due to incessant rains in the district.

Kolhapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Shailesh Balkawde said, “The road near Shiroli is closed for vehicular movement near Shiroli village as the bridge nearby has been submerged.”

He said that if the water level of Panchganga river in Kolhapur goes further down, there is a possibility of water receding in this part. He said that the extension of this highway in Belgaum district of Karnataka is also under water.

The district administration said that four automatic gates of the upstream Radhanagari dam have been opened and water is being released at the rate of 6,900 cusecs on Sunday night.

The statement said that more than 1.45 lakh people stranded in the flood-affected areas of Kolhapur have been shifted to safer places.

It is likely that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will conduct an aerial survey of Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur on Monday.
