There are 112 proposed locations for new colleges under the University of Mumbai and 28 proposals from the management of the colleges were sent to the Department of Higher and Technical Education, Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra government has received 183 proposals from universities to start new colleges this year. The State had identified 434 locations for this purpose. However, less than half the places identified by the government have received interest from various universities. After getting the green signal from the government, the academic session 2023-24 will start in these colleges.

According to a Times of India report, there are 112 proposed locations for new colleges – under the University of Mumbai – and 28 proposals from the management of the colleges were sent to the Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra. Most of these 28 proposals are for law colleges. Meanwhile, Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune sent 31 offers for 33 places.

The government had set March 31 as the deadline for the colleges and universities to submit the proposals to the respective managements after examining the proposals at their own level. Reports suggest that these proposals are currently being studied by the department and the final list of approved colleges will be released soon.

Around 54 college managements had shown interest out of 112 proposed locations identified under the University of Mumbai scheme. Of these, around 26 proposals were rejected at the university level and only 28 proposals were sent to the department after thorough scrutiny, the report said. According to the report, an official said, “The state may further examine these and release the final list of approved colleges soon.” The official said that of the 28 offers from Mumbai University, 16 are for law colleges, while the remaining 12 are for science, arts and commerce colleges.

Over the years, there has been a steady decline in the number of offers coming from the college management. Maharashtra had earlier identified 1,338 places for new colleges for 2022-23. But only less than one-fourth of the total got state approval, revealed a university official.

Among all the proposals that are coming, there are also new colleges which are also putting a burden on the universities. The University of Mumbai currently has 860 affiliated colleges. Recently, the principal of a college said that Mumbai University, which has adequate arts, science and commerce colleges as well as law colleges, is being run with meager resources.
