Maharashtra government claims to have trained 1.46 lakh teachers in last 10 years, impacted 4.38 million students

The Maharashtra government today marked a 10-year partnership with the British Council in organizing teacher training programmes. The council claims that between 2012 and 2021, the programs successfully trained approximately 2,000 master trainers and 1,46,000 teachers, benefiting 4.38 million learners in government schools.

The Maharashtra government launched four separate projects aimed at improving the English language proficiency of primary and secondary school teachers and students across the state. The teacher was given English language training and pedagogy by the British Council.

The Council said, “The 10-year long program has greatly helped in shifting the mindset from ‘Training as an Event’ to ‘Training as a Process’ with a clear shift in mindset around Sustainable Professional Development (CPD) Is.”

An independent evaluation report was unveiled at the event. It assessed the extent of the reach and measurable impact of the British Council’s work in Maharashtra over the past decade. The report also provided evidence-based recommendations and predictions that guide future teacher education programs in the state, including considering gender-related factors and opportunities for technology adoption.

Varsha Gaikwad, Minister for School Education, Government of Maharashtra, who was present at the event, said, “Our partnerships with British Councils, such as Tejas and English for All Mumbai (EFA), have led to a significant improvement in the competency of teachers, resulting in years for our students.
