529 new cases of Kovid registered in Maharashtra, but no death

Maharashtra: Four cases of COVID-19 subvariant BA4 and Omron variant BA5 detected for the first time in Pune, informed health officials. Officials said all the patients had only mild symptoms and were treated at home.

The new variant has been identified in a complete genomic sequencing conducted by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and confirmed by the Indian Biological Data Center (IBDC) Faridabad.

Brief statistics of patients:

  • All these patients – 4 men and 3 women – are residents of Pune city. Their samples were taken between May 4 and 18.
  • Of these, 4 are in the age group of above 50 years and 2 are in the age group of 20 to 40 years while one is in the age group of less than 10 years.
  • Two of these patients have a travel history to South Africa, Belgium, while three have traveled to the Indian states of Kerala and Karnataka. Two patients have no travel history.
  • Everyone except a 9-year-old has received both doses of the Kovid vaccine, while one has also received a booster.
  • All of them had mild symptoms of Kovid. Officials said no one needed to be hospitalized and treated successfully at home.

529 new covid cases today

The state health department said that Maharashtra reported 529 new cases of Kovid, but no deaths. The number of infected in the state increased to 78,85,394, while the death toll remained unchanged at 1,47,858.

The state had recorded 536 new cases and zero deaths a day earlier. At least 325 people were discharged from hospitals or cured at home on Saturday, taking the number of recoveries to 77,34,764, leaving the state with 2,772 active cases.

The mortality rate is 1.87 percent, while the recovery rate is 98.09 percent. Mumbai reported 330 new cases, followed by neighboring Thane city with 38, Pune 32 and Navi Mumbai 31.

The Mumbai circle – which includes neighboring satellite cities and the municipal corporation – recorded 448 cases of COVID-19, while the Pune circle recorded 64 infections.
