Nagpur: In a new initiative to involve youth in tackling climate change, Maharashtra Government has started internship for youth under its latest program Climate Fellowship Program. Under this, the selected youth will get a rare opportunity to represent the government and lead international coalitions.
Designed by the state environment and climate change department headed by the environment minister Aaditya ThackerayThe idea of the program is to expand the environment department and create a solid narrative on climate change. “Though we call upon the youth to take up challenges and say that they are the future, we hardly delegate responsibilities to them. Being in my 30s myself, I see the difference youth can make when called upon to do good.” Thackeray Told TOI.
The state has invited applications for the six-month internship program from undergraduate, postgraduate and researchers from any background. A total of 20 internship positions have been announced. This is the second cycle of the programme, the first of which was held in February this year.
Giving details, Aaditya Said, “Climate change mitigation and adaptation is one area where youth will go beyond their call of duty as it is for them and their future generations. We need innovation, fire in the belly and fresh ideas and passion. That’s what interns get.”
Through this initiative, youth will get an opportunity to take a leadership role in climate change dialogue at national and international level. “What we have realized is that climate change is a very cross-cutting topic and we need young policy makers to become extremely fluid within government. Through this program, interns take the lead in moving to various government departments. – be it energy, pollution control board, agriculture or any other and tie together the climate narrative,” said Saurabh Punamiya Jain, research and public policy assistant, state cabinet minister for environment and climate change.
To ensure sustainable development of the state and raise awareness about the growing climate emergencies, Maharashtra has been active in being a part of the C40 cities, cities 4 forests, U-2 alliance among other projects. Manjhi Vasundhara. “After participating in such ventures, the question arises how do you continue engagement as these are very contemporary forms of networks that can be difficult for a typical government official to deal with on their own. They come in – they lead and represent from the lowest level of government to the highest level of administration,” Jain said.
