Maharashtra Political Crisis: In a relief to the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, the Supreme Court on Monday said that no decision will be taken on their disqualification till July 11. After the Supreme Court proceedings, there was an atmosphere of happiness in the camp of rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, while busy politics started in India. Janata Party (BJP) and the mood turned gloomy in the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Rebel leader minister Eknath Shinde tweeted, “This is a victory for Hindutva of Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray and ideology of Dharmaveer Anand Dighe.” Meanwhile, sources told that CM Uddhav Thackeray wanted to resign, he tried twice but alliance partner and NCP chief Sharad Pawar stopped him from doing so. Sources also said that the BJP has started preparations for the floor test, but may not be ready for it. Meanwhile, the ED summoned Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, who termed it as a conspiracy and said that he would not be able to appear before the agency on June 28. Acting against the rebels, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray removed nine ministers from their portfolios who were camping in Guwahati. Simultaneously, the Manipur Shiv Sena chief was stopped from meeting the rebel MLAs at a hotel in Guwahati. Shiv Sena said that it is now clear that BJP is pulling strings in the ongoing political drama in Maharashtra. Congress state chief Nana Patole, who met Uddhav Thackeray, said, “We are alliance partners. We will sit together and discuss things.” Congress minister and former CM Ashok Chavan also met Thackeray. The ruling MVA alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress is grappling with a political crisis that surfaced last week after Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde visited Surat in Gujarat and Guwahati in Assam along with several Shiv Sena MLAs from there. Both the states are ruled by BJP.

  1. The faction – currently in a hotel in Guwahati – erupted in joy and celebration after the apex court’s verdict and also expressed its gratitude to the Center for providing security to the rebel MLAs and their families.
  2. Shinde is said to have started the process of finalizing the Maharashtra Governor and sending a letter that he has withdrawn support to the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress MVA government.
  3. On the opposition side, the BJP’s core committee meeting is underway with top leaders present to finalize its strategy to form the next government in the state, possibly with the help of the rebel group.
  4. Shinde has claimed the support of 39 MLAs from the Army and 11 independents or other parties, taking the total number to 48, and the group is likely to extend its stay in Assam for a few more days.
  5. Several leaders attending the meeting were seen smiling in anticipation and some carrying a ‘V’ sign indicating an upbeat mood.
  6. Hitting out again, MVA minister Aaditya Thackeray alleged that several MLAs were misled or kidnapped to join the rebel group and the party was ready to take them back.
  7. Aaditya Thackeray said, “If the rebels had the guts, they would have resigned earlier and faced the electorate instead of all this.”
  8. Shiv Sena’s chief spokesperson and MP Sanjay Raut said that “this is a legal battle and will continue” and added that the party will fight it.
  9. Meanwhile, sources said the BJP is preparing for a floor test, though it will not ask for it, but smaller regional parties may demand a trust vote.
  10. Senior Congress and NCP leaders met Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray after the Supreme Court stayed the disqualification proceedings before the Deputy Speaker till July 11 on petitions questioning the validity of notices by rebel MLAs seeking their disqualification. Feedback sought.
