Maharashtra Board students reject offline exams, demand for online SSC, HSC papers

Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) On Thursday night, Maharashtra Board announced to conduct class 10 and 12 exams in offline mode. The decision has angered many students, who are now demanding the board to withdraw its decision and conduct online exams instead.

Many students claim that they are scared of the new Omicron version and with the rise in new cases in the country, they should be allowed to appear for the exam online. Raising similar concerns, many took to the social media platform with the hashtag #cancelboardexams2022.

Highlighting that most of the students are not vaccinated, a Twitter user claiming to be a student says,

Many students also claimed that they are not ready to take the exam in offline mode as all their exams have been done online since last two years.

As per the schedule announced by the Board, Exams will start from 15th March and will end on 18th April, The syllabus has been reduced by 25 percent for both the classes and the question paper will be set on the reduced syllabus. Apart from this, the practical exam will be conducted from February 14 to March 3 for HSC and from February 25 to March 14 for SSC students. The detailed schedule for practical examinations which includes oral, internal assessment has not been released yet.

Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad while announcing the date sheet for the offline board exams said, “Health and well being of the students is our priority. To ensure a conducive environment for the students, we conducted a series of consultations with schools, principals, headmasters, teachers and experts regarding assessment mode and exam schedule. His suggestions were incorporated.”

Every year at least 20 lakh students register for Maharashtra board exams including both SSC and HSC. Last year, the Maharashtra Board did not conduct the exam due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results based on the alternative evaluation mode were one of the best ever recorded by the state board. 99.63 per cent students who registered for the Maharashtra HSC exam had passed the board. In SSC, 95.30 per cent students passed the exam, again in one of the highest results.
