An average of 76 per cent polling was recorded in 106 nagar panchayats in 32 districts of Maharashtra on Tuesday. The election was conducted without reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The Nagar Panchayat seats in Beed saw a contest between supporters of BJP leader Pankaja Munde and her cousin and NCP’s state minister Dhananjay Munde.

Similarly, in Sindhudurg too, the main contest was between Shiv Sena supporters and Union Minister Narayan Rane of BJP. The opposition BJP in Maharashtra won four of the six seats in the state legislative council elections held earlier this month.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) had last week said that the elections to local bodies from OBC reserved constituencies, which were due on Tuesday, will now be held on January 18 and these seats will be converted into general category. court ruling. The Supreme Court last week directed the Maharashtra SEC to notify 27 per cent of seats in local bodies, which were reserved for OBCs, as a general category, so that the election process can go ahead.

The state government wanted the SEC to put on hold all local body elections till the OBC political quota is restored. However, the top court, while hearing the Maharashtra government’s plea seeking modification of its December 6 order, directed the SEC to issue fresh notification for 27 per cent OBC seats within a week. In March this year, the top court had said that reservation in favor of OBCs in local bodies in Maharashtra cannot exceed 50 per cent of the total number of seats reserved for SCs, STs and OBCs.
