Mahaparinirvana Day 2021: Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, died on 6 December 1956. Born in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar was the 14th and last child of his parents. He was primarily an economist and educationist. Babasaheb was also the flag bearer of India’s Dalit activism, who is called the main architect of the Indian Constitution.
BR Ambedkar was as the chairman of the constitution drafting committee for the constitution of the independent India On August 29, 1947. He was also the Law Minister of India after independence. He also started fortnightly and weekly papers named ‘Bahishkrit Bharat’, ‘Mook Nayak’, ‘Janata’ to raise voice against the atrocities on Dalits. At the time of marriage, the age of his first wife was only 9 years.

1. He did his Masters in 64 subjects, knew 9 languages and studied around the world for 21 years. He was also the first Indian to pursue a doctorate.

2. Ambedkar, who is known to be a Buddhist, was born into a Hindu family belonging to the Mahar caste of Maharashtra, which was then considered a lower caste and his people were called ‘untouchables’. He converted to Buddhism in 1956.
3. The chief architect of the 20-page autobiography of the Indian Constitution, Waiting for a Visa, is used as a text book at Columbia University.
4. He is till date the only Indian whose statue has been installed in the London Museum with Karl Marx.
5. Rajgir, Babasaheb’s personal library was the largest library in the world with more than 50 thousand books.
6. Buddha’s eyes are closed in all the paintings and statues of Buddha around the world, Ambedkar was the first person who painted him with open eyes.
7. He was the first backward caste lawyer.
8. His original surname was Ambavdekar, which was changed to Ambedkar by his teacher in the school.
9. Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
10. He was the only Satyagrahi across the world who did Satyagraha for drinking water.
