Mahalaya 2021: Mahalaya is the last date of Pitru Paksha on Wednesday 6th October. It is believed that Goddess Durga visits the earth on her annual journey on this day as Devi Paksha begins the next day.

Mahalaya has special significance for Bengal and Bengalis. And for the past 90 years, it has been a ritual in most Bengali households to wake up at dawn on this day to welcome the Mother Goddess by playing the Mahishasuramardini composition, a timeless classic, on the radio.

The 90-minute musical performance, originally composed to be performed live on radio in 1931, chronicles the creation of Goddess Durga to save Mahishasura, the buffalo demon.

Famous old-timer composer Pankaj Kumar Mallick set it to the tune and it became a tradition in every Mahalaya to live the composition from 4 am onwards. Top artists of the time lent their voices to devotional songs, including Chandipath by the famous Birendra Krishna Bhadra.

The cast included Supriti Ghosh, Dwijen Mukhopadhyay, Manabendra Mukhopadhyay, Aarti Mukhopadhyay, Utpala Sen, Tarun Banerjee, Krishna Dasgupta, Shyamal Mitra, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay and Pankaj Mallick.

From 1966, All India Radio started playing the recorded version of the classic composition.
