Maha Minister Ink Attack: Police Drop Attempt to Murder Charge, Revoke Suspension of 10 Cops

The Pimpri Chinchwad police in Maharashtra’s Pune district have dropped the charge of attempt to murder against three men arrested for allegedly throwing ink at state minister Chandrakant Patil, and also suspended the suspension of 10 police personnel in connection with the incident. has been cancelled, a top official has said.

The incident took place in Pimpri town on Saturday in protest against minister Patil’s controversial remarks about Dr BR Ambedkar and social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. Three men threw ink at Patil when he was coming out of an office bearer’s house, following which he was arrested.

Ten policemen, including three officers, were suspended for alleged security lapses following the incident.

We have removed section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the case registered against three accused for allegedly attacking Patil with ink. However, the other sections under which he was booked will remain,” Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Ankush Shinde said on Tuesday.

Police said other sections invoked in the case are 120B (criminal conspiracy), 355 (assault or criminal force to any person), 500 (defamation), and 34 (common intention).

“The suspension of 10 policemen has also been revoked,” Shinde said.

A day earlier, Patil demanded the release of those arrested in connection with the ink attack and also sought revocation of the suspension of police personnel.
