Kesarkar said that on September 7, instructions were issued to the Ahmednagar district collector and the concerned divisional commissioner.

The Maharashtra government told the Legislative Council here on Wednesday that it has asked the district administration to submit a proposal to rename Ahmednagar as Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Nagar.

Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar gave this statement in response to a question during the Question Hour.

However, he did not specify whether the government intends to rename the city of Ahmednagar in central Maharashtra or the district where it is headquartered, or both.

Ahmednagar is named after its 15th-century ruler, Ahmed Nizam Shah I.

Kesarkar said that on September 7, instructions were issued to the Ahmednagar district collector and the concerned divisional commissioner.

The minister said that the government has also written to the commissioner of Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation, Divisional Railway Manager, Senior Post Master and Tehsildar to send such proposals.

Kesarkar said that once the proposal is received, it will be placed before the state cabinet for approval and later sent to the central government for a final decision.
