Bhopal: The death toll in rain-related incidents has risen to 24 in the flood-affected Gwalior and Chambal divisions of Madhya Pradesh.
Officials said the flood situation is gradually improving and “no life-threatening” scenario currently exists in the region, where rescue and relief operations are on.
According to news agency PTI, Revenue Secretary Dnyaneshwar Patil said, “The death toll in rain-related incidents in the flood-affected parts of the state has risen to 24. These deaths were recorded between August 1 and 7.
As of Friday, officials had put the death toll at 12, with the death toll reaching 24 on Saturday.
Earlier this week, the flood situation in northern Madhya Pradesh had turned dire, where over 1,250 villages were affected by floods that were followed by heavy rains.
Gwalior, Shivpuri, Sheopur, Datia, Ashok Nagar, Guna, Bhind and Morena districts were affected as the region was receiving rain throughout the week.
However, from Thursday, the intensity of rain started decreasing in both the divisions.
Divisional commissioner Ashish Saxena said, “There is no life-threatening situation as of now due to floods in Gwalior and Chambal divisions.”
Earlier in the day, addressing the ‘Anna Utsav’ event, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that 8,832 people were rescued from the flood-affected parts of the state, while 29,280 others were shifted from these areas to safer places.
Saxena said that about 50 people trapped in the flood-hit areas of Ashok Nagar district of Gwalior division have been rescued.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Air Force (IAF) teams have reached Ashok Nagar for rescue operations, he said, adding that an army contingent is also about to reach the affected areas.
“The rescue operation in the affected areas is almost over and relief work is progressing rapidly,” the official said.
Meanwhile, senior meteorologist PK Saha of India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bhopal office said that Ashok Nagar and Guna districts of Gwalior division received 32.0 mm and 164.1 mm of rain respectively in the 24 hours ended at 8.30 am on Saturday.
“A low pressure area is now persisting over northern parts of east Madhya Pradesh and its neighbourhood. It was over north Madhya Pradesh and central parts of neighborhood on Friday,” he said.
With its transfer to East MP, the flood situation in Gwalior and Chambal is likely to improve as the rain activity is likely to reduce from Saturday.
In a series of tweets in the morning, the Chief Minister said, “I took stock of the flood situation and the ongoing rescue operation in Guna, Ashoknagar, Vidisha districts this morning. The rescue operation of the Indian Air Force resumed this morning. SDRF and NDRF teams are also working since night to rescue the people trapped in the villages.
He said that 15 people were rescued during the rescue operation by helicopters from Barari and Sirsora villages of the flood-hit Ashok Nagar district on Saturday morning.
Six more people were rescued from Vasuniya Ghat village in the same district and shifted to a safer place. He said teams from Vidisha district rescued six people trapped on a tree in Rinia village of Vidisha district.
Meanwhile, State Congress President Kamal Nath met the flood-affected people of the area on Saturday.
