Actress Madhu, who plays a pivotal role in Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Shakuntalam, talks about the film’s box office failure. Shakuntalam released earlier this month and didn’t live up to the expectations at the box office. The film received mixed reviews and there were very few takers for the film. Madhu, who plays Maneka, Shakuntala’s mother in the film, confessed that she was sad that the film could not take off.
“I feel very sad that Shakuntalam has underperformed because the producers and makers have given it all. From pre-production to release, ‘Unholy anywhere didn’t let our picture down’. After shooting and dubbing, he spent an entire year on CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). He never took the process lightly and made sure it was a visual treat. During the shoot, I noticed that he never put any pressure on the artistes or technicians. He also took care of our comfort,” Madhu told DNA India.
Citing the success of RRR and Baahubali, he said, “Shakuntalam has a strong South Indian flavor with mythology. Ab Bahubali chali… RRR chali gayi… Jab koi picture chali gayi, aap nahi jaateen.. Logic nahi hota (Bahubali, RRR worked. There is no exact reason behind the success of the film). No one expected that Baahubali would be such a huge hit. Even if it was made well, no one had expected such a huge success. We never thought that the film would underperform at the box office. So it hurts you because this is the film where everyone worked really hard.”
Reportedly made on a budget of over Rs 60 crore, Shakuntalam reportedly failed to even collect Rs 10 crore at the box office. It was claimed that producer Dil Raju and director Gunasekhar together incurred a loss of more than Rs 20 crore on this project.
