Lunar eclipse 2021: One moon, many names – why today’s lunar eclipse is special

New Delhi: The lunar eclipse visible in some parts of the world today is the longest partial lunar eclipse since the 15th century.

The day is special for several reasons as the lunar eclipse coincides with the full moon of November, and will also be a blood moon.

During a near-total lunar eclipse, the Moon will be full. According to NASA, Native Americans named the November full moon “Beaver Moon.” This is because beavers were particularly active around this time to prepare for winter and it was time to set up traps.

NASA said that the full moon of November is also called Frost, Frosty or Snow Moon because winter begins at this time of year.

According to NASA, from Wednesday, the Moon appears full and will remain so until Saturday morning.

Kartik Purnima And Blood Moon

November Purnima is Kartik Purnima in India. This day is very important for Hindus and Jains.

Sikhs celebrate Kartik Purnima as the guruparva of the first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev.

Today’s lunar eclipse is special for another reason. Since the Moon would be blocked by the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, a “beaver moon” would become a “blood moon”.
