Lumpy skin disease: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday announced compensation for cattle killed due to the deadly lumpy skin disease at the beginning of the year.

LSD hit Namchi, Pakyong and Soreng districts a few months ago, killing a large number of livestock. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services had taken several measures to contain the spread of the disease.

Addressing a function on the occasion of Cowherd Day in South Sikkim’s Jorethang town, the Chief Minister said that 2000 Holstein breed cows would be distributed among the cattle rearers to boost milk production in the state.

He said that to improve the procurement, 40 milk collection centers would be set up from next year at a cost of Rs 5 lakh. He also announced an award of Rs 10 lakh to the best milk cooperative society of the state from this year.
