Lucknow school disappeared overnight, classes on the road

It is a curious case of a 140-year-old school going child going missing almost overnight.

When the teachers and students of this school of Golaganj locality of Lucknow returned after the holiday on Thursday, a shock was waiting for them. His historic school, Centennial Higher Secondary School and College, was moved, and a new private school stood in its place.

School hoardings and nameplates were changed and students and teachers were denied entry to the campus.

After this, about 360 students sat outside the gate and the teachers took classes on the road itself.

Principal Rajiv David Dayal had complained to Primary Education Officer Vijay Pratap Singh and District School Inspector Rakesh Kumar. On Thursday evening, the officials arrived to inspect the school.

The school has around 10 permanent teachers and 360 students of classes 6 to 12 enrolled. When we reached the school, the name was changed and we were denied admission. The furniture was removed, the principal told reporters. And we were told that the school had been moved to a “playground under the tin shed.”

He said that he immediately complained to the education department officials who took cognizance and ensured to look into the matter.

“It was painful for us. Imagine you go to school with enthusiasm after summer vacation and you find that your school is no more. This is mental harassment of students,” said a teacher.

The school was established in 1862 as a small school in Hussainabad in the old city and has a long and proud history.

It was founded by Rev. JH Mesmore, a leading educationist missionary from Lucknow.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Suryapal Gangwar said on Friday that classes at Centennial Higher Secondary School and College would be held on the campus as before and a police force would be deputed outside the school to ensure law and order from Friday.

Gangwar issued the directions after DIOS Rakesh Kumar submitted a report to him.

He inspected the school along with BSA and other officials on the complaint of Principal Dayal that a private school has been opened in the campus due to a dispute in the school management. Management related matter is under consideration.

The DIOS said that since the school is government aided, no private school can run in its premises.

He also said that such private school in government aided campus cannot be given affiliation by BASIC. education council.
