LPL: Dambulla Giants beat Colombo Stars by 6 wickets in Eliminator

Dambulla Giants kept their title hopes alive by defeating Colombo Stars by 6 wickets in the Eliminator Match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) here on Sunday. The Giants will take on the losing team of the Qualifier 1 match between Jaffna Kings and Galle Gladiators in Qualifier 2 on Monday. After restricting the Stars to 145/6 in their 20 overs, the Giants chased down their target in 18.5 overs.

Dushmantha Chamira gave the Stars a great start with the ball by dismissing Niroshan Dickwella on the very first ball of Dambulla Giants’ innings. The Stars remained in the game with the wicket of Sandun Veerakkodi in the fourth over, as the Giants were reduced to 20/2.

However, Philippe Salt, Zenith Lianage and Najibullah Zadran scored with scores of 32, 56* and 34 respectively and ensured that the Giants walked off the field as the winners of the match.

Zenith Lianage played a brilliant innings of 56* off 47 balls and forged a vital partnership with Salt and Zadran. Lianage hit 5 fours during his innings.

Earlier, skipper Angelo Mathews’ brilliant knock of 50 off 34 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, helped Colombo Stars put up a fighting total on the board. Pathum Nisanka also played an innings of 42 runs in 39 balls. He hit 4 fours during his innings.

Nuwan Pradeep set the tone with the ball for Dambulla Giants by taking the wicket of Kusal Perera in the second over. Thereafter, the stars could not form partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nuwan Pradeep and Imran Tahir were the bowlers’ picks for the Giants with figures of 2/23 and 2/25 respectively.
