look | PM Modi’s heartwarming call to Neeraj Chopra, congratulates Olympic gold medalist

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called up Neeraj Chopra, who became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and congratulated him for making the country proud.

During the interaction, the Prime Minister praised Chopra, who won a gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Olympics.

Prime Minister Modi said that Chopra, through his historic feat, has inspired the younger generation to come forward and achieve excellence in the field of sports.

Prime Minister Modi also told Chopra that it was a very proud moment for his family and asked them to wish their parents the best.

The Prime Minister also tweeted about his interaction with Chopra and said that he “represents the best of sports talent and sportsman spirit”.

“Just spoke to @neeraj_chopra1 and congratulated him on winning the gold! Appreciated their hard work and tenacity, which have been on full display during #Tokyo2020. He shows excellent sportsmanship and sportsmanship. Best wishes for his future endeavours,” he posted on the micro-blogging platform.

Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day congratulated Chopra after his victory in the javelin throw and said that “history has been written” in Tokyo.

“History has been created in Tokyo! What @Neeraj_chopra1 achieved today will always be remembered. Young Neeraj has performed exceptionally well. He played with remarkable passion and showed unparalleled grit. Congratulations to him for winning the Gold.” #Tokyo2020,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced a special cash reward of Rs 2 crore for Chopra to bring glory to the nation and go down in history by winning India’s first Olympic gold in athletics.

“Neeraj Chopra, who is serving @adgpi, has brought laurels to the nation and etched his name in history by winning India’s first Olympic gold in athletics. It is our honor to announce a special cash reward of Rs. 2 crores for that. Proud moment for all Indians and our armed forces. Flag of India,” he posted on the micro-blogging platform.

Putting on a stellar performance to clinch India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics, Chopra recorded a best effort of 87.58m and went past Czech duo of Jakob Vadlage and Viteslav Vsli.

It was India’s first gold medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics and also the country’s second individual gold medal in its Olympic history after Abhinav Bindra’s victory in Beijing 2008.
