Loki finale: ‘He who lives’ uncovers multiverse, changes course of MCU

This article contains spoilers for Loki.

The much-awaited finale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 is finally here! Over the course of the past five weeks, we saw Loki get arrested by the Time Variance Authority, make a new friend, betray a friend, fall in love, and fight multiple versions of himself. It all really led to this exciting episode. However, we were left with more questions than ever before.

When we left Loki and Sylvie in Episode 5, they were standing at the end of time, ready to face the one who took away their lives, which made TVA. In the finale, he stood in front of his leader, but the results were different from our expectation.

The sixth episode begins with Loki and Sylvie entering the mysterious castle to find and kill TVA’s producer. They meet Miss Minutes, who tries to sell them a tough deal. If Loki and Sylvie leave the Creator alone, they can be integrated back into their timeline. In fact, if Loki agrees, he will win the Battle of New York, kill Thanos and receive the Infinity Gauntlet. Sylvie, on the other hand, will have a life full of happy memories together with Loki. However, they do not fall for the manipulation of Miss Minutes.

Back in TVA, Moebius confronts Ravona Rensselaer for her unwavering dedication to TVA, despite discovering that she herself is a variant who has been kidnapped from her life. On the other hand, Hunter B-15 leads TVA agents into Ravona’s human lives, revealing to them the truth behind their existence. On the other hand, Ravona escapes in search of ‘free will’.

Loki and Sylvie, who are now inside a dusty and dilapidated castle, come face to face with the man behind the TVA called ‘He Who Remains’. This man dressed in purple and green invites Loki and Sylvie to his office. Loki recounts how he is ‘just a man’, and Sylvie tries to kill him. However, he moves to another place just in time. He explains to those who live that He is the Knower and Seeer of all. Loki and Sylvie’s journey to the end of time didn’t happen because they were special. It happened because it had to happen.

Sylvie then asks him who he really is, and he says, “I have been dubbed by many by many names. A ruler, a conqueror, one who lives, a jerk.” This is the first official confirmation that the one he lives in is actually Kang the Conqueror, the big Marvel baddie. Of course, fans tracking MCU news already knew that when they saw actor Jonathan Ross, who has been cast as Kang in Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantamania. It also means that the biggest fan theory about Kang the Conqueror has turned out to be true.

However, in true Marvel fashion, what we anticipated doesn’t happen. In the episode, Kang (who is still not named in the show) explains that he was a scientist who lived on Earth in the 31st century and discovered that the Multiverse exists. He made contact with different forms of himself. While at first they coexisted peacefully, some variants tried to seek intergalactic control. They waged wars against each other to conquer other universes. To prevent what he remains, a sacred timeline had to be created, where no one from the multiverse could contact each other. He then created the TVA to save this timeline and the universe from infinitely evil versions of himself.

He then makes an offer to Sylvie and Loki. They could complete his mission by killing him, and then free the timeline, wreaking havoc on the multiverse. Or they can take Tva’s rule from him, and rule the universe.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Loki and Sylvie disagree over the course of the action. Sylvie, whose life mission was to end TVA, says that Kang is lying, and wants to kill him. Loki, on the other hand, treats Kang by saying that killing him would bring an uncontrollable amount of disaster upon the universe. Sylvie accuses Loki of manipulating her to ascend the throne. A depressed Loki fights Sylvie, stopping to express her feelings leading to a big kiss between the two. However, when she pushes him back to the TVA through a portal, he becomes shrewd. She then kills Kang, changing the course of the entire MCU.

Back in the TVA, the sacred timeline breaks down, through which thousands of branches emerge. Loki then tries to warn Möbius and the Hunter B-15, saying that a dangerous force is approaching and they need to defend themselves. However, freeing the sacred timeline changes reality as they know it, and so Moby and the Hunter B-15 fail to recognize who Loki is.

The show ends with a hapless Loki seeing a giant statue of the Timekeepers in TVA, only to find that it has been turned into a statue of Kang. Even though we’re left with a huge cliffhanger, there’s hope, as the mid-credits scene reveals Loki is coming back for Season 2.

What does this mean for the future of the MCU? Most fans know that Marvel Studios planned their multiverse stories in Phase 4. When Marvel’s parent company Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, there was talk of assimilating X-Men characters into the MCU through multiverse storytelling. Deadpool 3 will officially be in the MCU, and it’s time for the other characters to follow suit.

Along with the Loki finale, this is the first official mention of the Multiverse in the MCU. We mentioned earlier that Kang links Loki to Ant-Man 3. But with the Multiverse finally becoming a reality, we’ll see results in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home. In fact, the Loki finale may be the catalyst that starts all future projects in the MCU.

Directed by Kate Heron and produced by Michael Waldron, Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Sofia Di Martino, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Wunmi Mosaku in the lead roles. Loki is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar Premium and Disney+ Hotstar VIP.
