The Lok Sabha chamber in the new Parliament House, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 May, has triple the number of seats with enough space for 888 members, and the new Rajya Sabha has a seating capacity of 384 members.

BRS leader and Telangana minister KT Rama Rao on Tuesday said it would be a grave injustice to the southern states if the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats on the basis of population is done after 2026. If the BJP remains in power in the 2024 general elections, the government led at the Center will initiate the process of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.

The Lok Sabha chamber in the new Parliament House, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 May, has triple the number of seats with enough space for 888 members, and the new Rajya Sabha has a seating capacity of 384 members. This is in light of the fact that at some point in the future the delimitation exercise will increase the number of MPs in the country.

As per the 84th Amendment to the Constitution, constituency boundaries were frozen until the first census after 2026 or at least after 2031. The 1971 census is serving as the foundation for the current Lok Sabha seat allocation. Currently, the lower house of the parliament has 543 seats. Rama Rao said in a press release that the southern states, which follow the policies of the Center and control population with a progressive mindset, may suffer “grave injustice” with population-based delimitation.

He expressed apprehension that it is unfair and painful that southern states may get less Lok Sabha seats due to delimitation and on the other hand, it is unfortunate that states especially in the northern region are benefiting from the increase. Lok Sabha seats. The BRS leader claimed that it would benefit the northern states which do not control the population despite appeals from the central government.

He said, ‘The states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, which control population, are being severely punished today for their progressive policies.’ But also all kinds of human development indicators.

Rama Rao claimed that the southern states with only 18 per cent population contribute 35 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and are contributing so much to the national economic development and the country as a whole. He appealed to leaders and people of southern states to speak out against “injustice” that went beyond politics.
