With the Manchester Test being canceled due to COVID-19, fans of Indian cricket were given a harsh awakening that the pandemic is not over. Earlier it was head coach Ravi Shastri who was infected with the virus, but later it spread to other staff members as well. The cancellation of sports for Covid-19 is nothing new in the post-Covid-19 world. There have been occasions when cricket has taken a back seat. Here is a complete list:

5th Test in Manchester canceled after ‘unable to field a team’ due to COVID outbreak

India vs South Africa 2nd ODI, Lucknow (March 2020): This was the first India game to have a Covid casualty. The first ODI in Dharamsala was washed out and so teams flocked to the city, but the WHO had declared that the world was in the cloud of a pandemic, not a disease. Continuing the series could have been dangerous. The BCCI also followed suit and called off the series with one game still in Kolkata.

England vs South Africa, 1st ODI, Cape Town (December 2020): After a great T20I series, which England won, Eoin Morgan and his team were hoping to dominate the hosts in the three-match ODI series, but that never happened. Two from South Africa’s camp had tested positive, even when the T20I series was underway, and later another (player) tested positive. The news came even as the teams made their way into the dressing room. The match was canceled and the entire series was later cancelled.

England vs Sri Lanka Test Series (March 2020): Even though Sri Lanka Cricket has clearly said that the two-match series will continue, it never happened. Joe Root and his side landed in Sri Lanka after a good tour of New Zealand and were on the field, playing a tour game when news broke that the ECB had pulled the plug on the series. Supporters of England and members of the Burmese Army had already started moving out of the country when the ECB rescheduled it later that year.
