New Delhi: India’s largest insurance company LIC on Friday announced the launch of Bima Ratna, a non-linked, non-participating, individual savings life insurance plan that combines protection and savings. The new product was introduced to meet the needs of the domestic market.
Corporate agents, insurance marketing firms (IMFs), brokers, CPSC-SPVs, and POSP-LIs, as well as other intermediaries such as corporate agents, insurance marketing firms (IMFs), and brokers, can obtain the product.
LIC’s Bima Ratna plan provides financial assistance to the policyholder’s family in the event of the policyholder’s untimely death during the policy term, along with periodic payments for the policyholder’s survival at stipulated intervals to meet various financial demands.
In addition, the offer includes borrowing facilities to meet the liquidity requirements.
The salient features of the new scheme are as follows:
1. Death Benefit:
On the death of the Life Assured during the policy term after the date of commencement of risk, LIC pays the Death Benefit as well as the Guaranteed Additions accrued.
According to LIC, the sum assured on death is 125% of the Basic Sum Assured or more than seven times the annual premium. This death benefit payment shall not be less than 105 per cent of the premiums paid till the date of death (excluding any additional premium, rider premium and taxes).
However, if a minor below 8 years of age dies before the commencement of risk, the benefit provided is the premium paid (after taxes, any additional premium, and any rider premium, if applicable), and return of interest.
2. Survival Benefit:
If the term of the plan is 15 years, LIC will pay 25% of the Basic Sum Assured at the end of every 13th and 14th policy year. LIC will pay 25% of the Basic Sum Assured at the end of each of the 18th and 19th policy years for a 20 year term plan. If the policy is for a term of 25 years, LIC will pay the same 25% at the end of each of the 23rd and 24th policy years.
3. Maturity Benefit:
LIC notes in its Bima Ratna brochure that “Sum Assured on Maturity” is based on the Life Assured surviving to the stipulated date of maturity, provided the policy is “payable, along with any guaranteed additions accrued to maturity”. A placeholder for “Sum Assured on Maturity” is “Sum Assured on Maturity” equal to 50% of Basic Sum Assured.
4. Guaranteed Extras:
LIC will pay an additional guarantee of Rs 50 per principal payment of Rs 1000 from the first to the fifth year as promised. From the 6th to the 10th policy year, LIC will pay Rs.55 for every Rs.1000 of the principal sum assured, and from the 11th to the 25th policy year, a guaranteed increase of Rs.60 for the Basic Sum Assured of Rs.1000.
Specifically, the guaranteed addition in the year of death under an in force policy will be for the entire policy year.
However, if the premium is not paid on time, the guaranteed addition under the insurance will cease to be available.
The guaranteed addition for the policy year in which the final premium is received will be added in proportion to the premium received for that year in the case of a paid-up policy or on surrender of the policy, as per LIC.
5. Eligibility Conditions and Other Restrictions:
LIC offers a minimum Basic Sum Assured of Rs.5 lakhs. There is no restriction on the maximum Basic Sum Assured, though it should be in multiples of Rs 25,000.
15 years, 20 years and 25 years are the policy terms. If the policy is purchased through POSP-LI/CPSC-SPV, the policy term will be 15 or 20 years.
Bima Ratna has a premium paying term of 11 years for a policy term of 15 years. For policy terms of 20 years and 25 years, it is 16 years and 21 years.
For policy term of 15 years, the minimum age is 5 years of completion. Whereas the policy terms of 20 and 25 years require 90 days to complete.
For policy terms of 15 years, the maximum age is 55, while for policy terms of 20 years and 25 years, the maximum age is 50 and 45.
Also, if the policy is purchased through POSP-LI/CPSC-SPV, the policy can be purchased at the age of 65 years by reducing the term of the policy.
For insurance terms of 15 and 20 years, the minimum age for policy maturity is 20 years. For the policy term of 25 years, the maturity age is 25 years.
Maturity is defined as reaching the age of 70 years.
6. Date of Commencement of Risk:
If the age of the Life Assured at the time of entry is less than 8 years, the risk under this plan will commence from 2 years from the date of commencement or from the policy anniversary which coincides with the achievement of 8 years of age or immediately thereafter , whichever is first. For individuals 8 years of age or older, the risk will begin immediately.
7. Settlement Options:
Under a current or paid-up policy, the settlement option allows you to get the maturity benefit in increments of 5 years instead of a lump sum payment. This option can be exercised by the policyholder while the Life Assured is still a minor, or the Life Assured who is 18 years or more, can be exercised for all or part of the Maturity Fund payable under the policy.
The amount chosen by the policyholder/insured for this option (i.e. Net Claim Amount) can be expressed either in absolute value or as a percentage of the total claim payout.
The policy has monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual installments.
The minimum monthly installment is Rs 5,000, with quarterly installment of Rs 15,000, half yearly installment of Rs 25,000 and annual installment of Rs 50,000.
