LIC agent arrested for making fake death claims of Rs 1.81 crore in Odisha

The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Bhubaneswar has arrested an LIC agent on charges of fraudulent death claims in conspiracy with the nominees of the deceased persons. The accused has been identified as Kabirraj Behera, a resident of Jhadkata under Kanas police station area of ​​Puri district.

Kabirraj is working as LIC agent since 2003. He had managed to defraud a total of 23 LIC policies claiming to be alive in the names of four deceased persons. About three to five years after taking those policies, he got the fake death certificates made in the name of the insured.

The accused Kabirraj applied for death claims in favor of the nominees at LIC Branch Office, Khordha by using those fake death certificates and tried to avail financial benefits, death claims against those 23 policies.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the insurance policy was taken after the actual death of the insured, however, premiums were being paid regularly. In all the policies, the Sum Assured was kept below Rs 10 lakh, which falls within the financial power to settle the death benefits.

EOW SP Dilip Tripathi said, “As per the allegation, LIC agent Kabirraj Behera has duped of Rs 1.81 crore in the name of four deceased persons. We have investigated and arrested the accused. We have seized a lot of documents from Kabirraj’s house.”

As per reports, LIC had released the claims made by the nominee of 23 policies through the present accused amounting to over Rs 1.81 crore and payments against five policies.

Several incriminating documents in respect of the above death claims like Voter ID Card, ATM Card, Bank Passbook, Check Book, Aadhar Card and the correspondence made by the Claimant Nominee and LIC with those nominees have been seized from the house of Kabirraj. Further investigation is being done in the matter.
