Letter from UN Human Rights Panel: 1 lakh people should not be removed from Khori village of Haryana, it is necessary to protect people between monsoon and epidemic

The Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations (OHCHR) has appealed not to remove about one lakh people from Khori village in Haryana. The expert panel of OHCHR has written a letter to the Government of India on social media. The panel says that it is necessary to protect people between monsoon and corona epidemic. In such a situation it is not right to remove them from their homes.

The Haryana government is removing people from Khori village on the Delhi-Faridabad border as per the order of the Supreme Court. Actually, about 172 acres of land here has been declared as a protected forest area. Out of this, about 80 acres are the houses of the people. The Supreme Court on June 7 ordered the Haryana government to vacate the area.

Expert panel said – forest does not exist on the ground
OHCHR experts claim that due to mining of Khori village, the protected forests have already been lost. The government notified it as a protected forest in 1992, but even then no forest existed there. The panel said that by removing people from their homes, the Indian government is acting contrary to its own decision to provide houses to all by 2022.

All the houses built in Khori village have now been declared illegal. People have been asked to leave them.

Expert panel cited safety of children and women
OHCHR’s expert panel says that out of one lakh people to be removed, about 20,000 are children. At the same time, there are around 5000 pregnant and lactating women. They should not be rendered homeless amidst the double threat of monsoon and corona.

After the order of the Supreme Court, the administration has started the process of demolishing the houses in Khori village.

Haryana formulated rehabilitation policy for Khori
Haryana government has formulated a rehabilitation policy to remove people from Khori village. According to the government announcement, 2545 flats lying vacant in Dabua Colony and Bapu Nagar will be given to the people of Khori. People have to accept certain conditions and also pay money.

In a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said in defense of his government that our government has started the system of rehabilitation of all the local people. Vij says, ‘The orders for demolition of houses are from the highest court of the country, which is being followed. There is no violation of any kind of law in the present action. No problem is being allowed to any common man. We assure the local people that the Haryana government will make arrangements for their rehabilitation.

People are angry about the attitude of the government
Mohammad Salim, Nirmal Gorana, Phulwa Devi, Mohsin, Gawada Prasad, Ikrar, officers of Khori Mazdoor Awas Sangharsh Samiti, Khori, said that on July 5, DC Yashpal Malik and DCP Jaiveer Singh Rathi, along with DCP Mukesh Kumar, accompanied the people of Khori Village Sangharsh Samiti. There was a meeting with In this, DC and DCP informed that a joint meeting of Municipal Corporation and DC Faridabad and DCP Faridabad is to be held. After that the final decision will be taken. The final decision on the subject of survey and rehabilitation from the government was to come on 6th July. But before that, the Municipal Corporation and the police administration reached Khori with a bulldozer. This shows that the government is cheating the Khori residents.

OHCHR has intervened in the internal affairs of India in the past as well.
The United Nations Human Rights Office had earlier also accused India of human rights violations after the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. After this, the UNHRC had issued a statement about the farmers’ movement without knowing the truth. India had also lodged a protest against them.
