‘Let Good Sense Prevail’: Mamata Hits Back On Guv Dhankhar On Her ‘Political Police’ Remark

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar felt that ‘political police is a threat to democracy’, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee He retorted, “I hope the one who is making such a statement will correct himself.”

On the occasion of ‘Police Day’ and laying the foundation stone of polyfilm industrial unit at Panagarh Industrial Park in West Burdwan, he said, “I have seen (quoting Governor’s tweet). I hope whoever is making such a statement will correct himself. Due to some unacceptable acts, the entire police force cannot be blamed for this. Let goodwill prevail (pointing to the governor).

Banerjee’s response on Wednesday came after Governor Dhankhar tweeted, “On Police Day I expect all @WBPolice @KolkataPolice in this uniform to uphold the rule of law and act as ‘human rights warriors’. Politicized police is a threat to democracy and leads to a ‘police state’. The non-partisan approach is fundamental for the rule of law and democracy to flourish.”

The Chief Minister announced setting up of more than one industry in the state and announced an investment of Rs 6,000 crore in Panagarh. Mamta said that ethanol manufacturing industry has been developed in the state. The investment would be Rs 1,500 crore.

“Bio-fuels like ethanol will be produced in Bengal. The fuel made from broken rice will provide employment to more than 48,000 people.

Addressing the program, the Chief Minister blamed the central government for the lack of vaccines for COVID-19 in the state.

“We have maintained zero wastage and have achieved our vaccination targets so far. However, the vaccines are not being supplied by the Centre. Till August 31, we have crossed the target of 4 crore, but we still need 14 crore vaccine doses, but the Center is not giving us,” she said.

Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “Someone had promised to bring back black money, but nothing happened but we have fulfilled what we promised to the people while maintaining transparency.”

On reports of chaos at some vaccination centres, he urged people not to rush and requested everyone to maintain law and order situation for better management of vaccination campaign.

In a significant move, he also announced that banks will remain open full time from September 2 till 5 pm. The decision was taken for the benefit of the people to create bank accounts for the state government’s ‘Lakshmi Bhandar’ project.

Laxmi Bhandar is a direct benefit transfer of Rs 500 per month to general category women and Rs 1,000 per month to reserved category women.

On the poultry industry, he said, ‘The government will give subsidy, the bank is giving loans, the poultry industry. I want to encourage people to start this business. Why import eggs from outside? Be independent. I have reduced poverty by 40 percent even in extreme circumstances. While employment is declining in the country, there has been an increase of 40 per cent in employment in the state.

The Chief Minister said that a data center industry would be set up in the state. “We will focus on the data industry to make Bengal as the center of information management and collection. There will be 24,000 jobs in the information technology sector.

On Deuta Panchami coal mine, he said, “The world’s second largest coal mine will be built here. An investment of Rs 15,000 crore will be made here. Once it is built, there will be no shortage of electricity for the next hundred years.

“Now my aim is to bring investment and industry to Bengal,” he said.

Responding to Banerjee’s claim of bringing investment to Bengal, BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya said, “There is no investment in Bengal and all her claims are false. She is fooling the people of Bengal and it is unfortunate that under the present ruling government, Bengal has lagged behind in many areas including investment.
