Lalit Modi accuses BCCI, says betting companies can now buy IPL team

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced the inclusion of two new teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The tournament, with eight teams participating in the cash-rich T20 league so far, will become a 10-team affair from next season.

Billionaire RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, commonly known as RPSG Group, won the bid for the Lucknow franchise with a bid of Rs 5625 crore and RPSG Group claimed the Lucknow franchise with a bid of Rs 7090 crore.

Soon after the BCCI made an official announcement about the same after the completion of the bidding process, former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi took to Twitter on Wednesday to level serious allegations against one of the owners of the new IPL team.

“I think betting companies can buy IPL teams. There should be a new rule. Obviously, a qualified bidder also owns a big betting company. What next? Doesn’t BCCI do its homework? In such a case What can anti-corruption do? #cricket.”

The number of matches in IPL will also increase next year. The IPL 2022 edition can have a total of 74 matches, with each team playing 7 home and 7 away matches.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said, “We are extremely happy that Indian cricket is progressing. That is what is important to us. We look at Indian cricket and that is our job. The richer Indian cricket, the better it will be.” ANI on the addition of two new IPL teams.
