Lakshmi Manchu to play a female soldier in her next Telugu film

After playing supporting roles in Mani Ratnam’s Kadal and Katrin Mozhi, both starring Jyothika, actress Lakshmi Manchu is back in Tamil cinema with an untitled project starring Tharashan Tyagaraja and Madhuri Jain, which has already been released in the 2021 comedy-drama Sivakumarin Sabtham. Born and raised in Chennai, Lakshmi considers Tamil her first language, even though it is not her mother tongue. The established Telugu actress, producer and TV presenter said that she loves to talk in Tamil.

“The whole affair is full of youth and that has attracted me to this project. I am the senior most,” Lakshmi said.

Laxmi revealed that the character she will be playing in the upcoming film will be named Rajni. “I have advised Anirudh that my scenes need a Baasha-style re-recording. Rajni is a cop, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, who is expert in his work,” she said of her character in the film.

She did some preparation for the role as it would be her first character as a female cop and she ‘wanted to fit the role well’. Lakshmi also said that she has a lot of friends who are officers and she used to call them to ask ridiculous questions about what kind of guns they have.

The Guntur Talkies and Laxmmi Bomb actress is no stranger to Kollywood. In 2018, she appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Kadal and the comedy-drama Katrin Mojhi.

Manchu is the daughter of veteran actor Mohan Babu. He graduated from Oklahoma City University in the United States with a bachelor’s degree in theater. He has won the SIIMA Award, two Filmfare Awards South and two State Nandi Awards. He has also worked with television channels in the US before returning to India.

Meanwhile, female actors playing cops are not uncommon in South cinema. In recent years, Nayanthara (in Imaikka Nodigal), Kajal Aggarwal (in Ghosty) and Jyothika (in Nachiyar) have all played police officers.
