Lakhimpur Kheri: Heartbroken and tears as families try to deal with personal grief. Outlook India Magazine

October 4, 2021 in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh usually has a mild, autumn morning. Four glass, refrigerated coffins are lying on an 11 feet wide road in Tikonia, the outskirts of Lakhimpur Kheri. They hold the bodies of farmers who lost their lives in the violence.

The eyes of the women swelled due to constant crying, they stood nearby. Their faces, stricken with grief, reflect the excruciating sufferings of the past two weeks. A few meters away stands an old farmer who is constantly trying to wipe his eyes with a parana (a small piece of cloth used to cover/clean the face), but not with those tears who constantly roll down his wrinkled face. His son Gurvinder Singh is lying in a coffin.

Till now, farmers come in large numbers to pay homage to the deceased and gather in a nearby field. Tractor-trolleys are parked on the side of the road to prevent crowding. Every passerby respects the dead bodies with folded hands.
