Lucknow: BSP supremo Mayawati Said on Thursday that there is hope of justice in Lakhimpur Violence Intervening in the matter, the Supreme Court has sought a status report from the Uttar Pradesh government.
He said that a delegation of BSP led by the party general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP SC Mishra to meet families of farmers killed in October 3 violence Lakhimpur Kheri.
In a tweet in Hindi, Mayawati said, “The trial initiated by the Supreme Court in the Lakhimpur incident gave people hope of relief and fair justice, as the BJP government’s attitude in this matter appeared mostly biased.”
Hours after his remarks, the Supreme Court on Thursday sought a status report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the accused named by the police in the FIR by Friday and whether they have been arrested.
The top court has also reportedly sought details of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the state government and the Judicial Inquiry Commission.
In another tweet, the BSP chief said there is clear anger among people over the death of farmers and a journalist.
Four farmers were crushed by an SUV in Lakhimpur Kheri when a group agitating against the Centre’s three new agricultural laws protested against the visit of UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on October 3.
Angry protesters allegedly thrashed two BJP workers and a driver, while a local journalist was also killed in the violence.
FIR registered against the son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra under IPC section 302 (murder) Ashish Mishra Others are involved in the incident at Tikonia police station but no arrest has been made so far.
Farmer leaders have claimed that Ashish was in one of the cars that allegedly drove the protesters down, but the minister has denied the allegations.
