The newly formed Union Territory of Ladakh has declared the black-necked stork and snow leopard as its state birds and animals. The announcement by the Union Territory’s Lieutenant Governor comes nearly two years after President Ram Nath Kovind passed a law bifurcating the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) into two union territories – Ladakh and J&K.
The black-necked crane was previously the state bird of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, with the Hangul as the state animal. After partition, new symbols were needed for the nascent union territory of Ladakh. The crane was chosen as the state bird as it is found only in the eastern region of Ladakh. Snow leopards are mainly found in the western and eastern regions of the Himalayas, including Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
