One person was rescued and at least six others were feared trapped when an under-construction bridge collapsed in Nubra sub-division of Leh district on Saturday evening, officials said.

Officials said Ladakh Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur is closely monitoring the rescue operation and has ordered a probe into the incident. He said that a part of Shatse Takna bridge under construction near village Diskit suddenly collapsed.

“The under-construction bridge which was being launched could not withstand the strong winds blowing in the Ladakh region this evening,” an official spokesperson said. He said a laborer working on the bridge has been rescued and is undergoing treatment. His condition is said to be stable.

“It is feared that five to six people are trapped under the collapsed bridge and the administration is doing everything possible to rescue them at the earliest,” the spokesman said. He said that the rescue operation was being supervised by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Lakshya Singhal along with other officers who were monitoring the progress of the rescue operation.

The spokesman said operational support has been mobilized from the Army’s local 102 Brigade, Border Roads Organisation’s Vijayak Project and Leh Air Force Station. He said that the Indian Air Force has been called to evacuate the rescued people from Leh.

The spokesman said that ambulances and other medical facilities have been provided to check the rescued people. The spokesman said that Mathur has assured all possible help to the people affected in the accident, especially the laborers engaged in the construction of the bridge.
