DInside a two-storey building at a diamond processing unit in Surat, Gujarat, overlooking a well-manicured lawn, sits an air-conditioned laboratory where a curious process is at work. In a few dozen nondescript machines, each the size of a small refrigerator, being carefully monitored digitally every second by an expert, growing a fruit like no other: a diamond in the rough.
