Kusal Perera in race against time for ICC T20 World Cup with hamstring injury

Kusal Perera, one of the key members of the Sri Lankan cricket team, may miss the T20 World Cup. The explosive batsman sustained an injury while running between the wickets during the third T20I match against South Africa. With the tournament just a month away, his recovery will have to be swift. However, hamstring injuries of this nature do not allow for rapid recovery. Sri Lanka announced their squad for the tournament with Perera in their name.

“Injury is a runner’s injury, which can be picked up while running between the wickets. Due to the nature of the injury, we cannot rehabilitate fast,” Sri Lanka team physician Dr. Daminda Attanayake told ESPNcricinfo.

Sri Lanka will start their campaign against Namibia on 17 October. They are placed in Group A with two other teams in the Netherlands and Ireland. They have to qualify from here to reach the main tournament.

The 31-year-old is a key player for the Islanders. He has scored 1416 runs at an average of 27.76 in 52 T20Is he has played for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka will tour Oman in the lead-up to the tournament where they play two ODIs against the hosts on 7 October and 9 October, followed by two warm-up matches against the same opposition team on 12 and 14 October before landing in the UAE. Once a powerhouse of cricketers, Sri Lanka looks toothless when it chases down the ICC trophy. They won the tournament in 2014 by defeating favorites India in the final.
