Uday KM, popularly known as Kadlur Uday Gowda, was welcomed into the party in the presence of state Congress president DK Shivakumar.

The Congress in Karnataka on Monday inducted a businessman, who was reportedly one of the key players in ‘Operation Kamala’ that led to the fall of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in 2019.

“Operation Kamala” (Operation Lotus), coined by opposition parties, refers to an alleged attempt by the BJP to engineer defection of opposition legislators to install its government and ensure its stability.

Udaya KM, also known as Kadalur Udaya Gowda, was welcomed into the party in the presence of state Congress president DK Shivakumar.

“Uday is being inducted into the Congress and has promised to work for strengthening the party in Mandya district. He is joining the party without any conditions. His induction has been approved by all local leaders,” Shivakumar told reporters.

Responding to a question about Uday being included despite his alleged role in engineering defection through Operation Kamala, he said: “…he (Uday) must have done things while in the opposite party…. Manju, Srinivasa Gowda, Gubbi Vasu, Shivalinga Gowda, Madhu Bangarappa (all MLAs/former MLAs) – they have shifted and are back in Congress. This is politics, there will be compulsions.”

“Did JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy and I, who fought each other for a long time, not join hands after the high command’s order (to form a coalition government after the 2018 polls)?” he asked.
