The Nepal government on Friday signed an agreement with GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, to buy 4 million doses of the Modern Coronavirus Vaccine.

According to a press statement by the World Bank, Nepal office, the vaccine will be imported under World Bank funding.

“Nepal is the second country globally to have entered into an agreement with GAVI for the purchase of 4 million doses of Moderna Vaccines, under World Bank funding, through the COVAX cost-share option,” the statement said. Gavi is a global, public-private health partnership.

Health Minister Umesh Shrestha said, “Nepal is an early mover in using the COVAX cost-share plan, and I am pleased to learn that we have put in place an arrangement, despite the challenging conditions, to bring safe and highly effective vaccines to Nepal. finalized.”

He said, “Modern vaccines have helped expand vaccination options among Nepalese over the age of 12 and fast-track Nepal’s progress towards a safer post-COVID world. “

“Deliveries of these vaccines are expected to begin by March 2022 and will contribute to the goal of immunizing at least 72 percent of Nepal’s population as well as children aged 12 to 17 years for whom the Moderna vaccine is considered safe and effective. goes,” the World Bank said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Nepal reported 3,915 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s case load to 800,256, the health ministry said.

The death toll rose to 10,239 after 27 COVID-related deaths were reported in the same period. At present, there are 38,798 active COVID-19 cases in Nepal.
