Mysore: Death toll COVID-19 infection in Mysore District Officials claim that this is not a cause for concern as all those who died had serious illness.
Officials say 15 children under the age of 17 have died in the past 16 months, but all of them had congenital anomalies and concomitant conditions, including hypothyroidism. For example, a 12-year-old girl, who contracted the virus after being in hospital for five days, was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and tuberculous bronchiectasis in addition to COVID-19.
Statistics show that on an average 2-3% of children have contracted the infection since March 2020. However, this June, 700 children in the district have taken the test. Affirmative till now.
District Surveillance Officer, Sivaprasad said that six children died during the first wave and since then, nine have succumbed to the infection, including the second wave which is much more severe than the first. This figure includes three infants who died of congenital anomalies and other health causes. The district has so far registered more than 1.6 lakh Covid cases in the last 16 months.
Meanwhile, health officials denied rumors that the third wave of COVID-19 has hit Mysore district as children are succumbing to the infection. He appealed to residents not to be misled and concerned by “false” information.
In June this year, the district has recorded nearly 19,000 positive cases so far, of which 700 are children who have been infected with the virus. Most of them have been asymptomatic. Incidentally, Mysore is the only district where the government has not lifted the lockdown restrictions due to its high positivity rate.
