Kolkata patient ran from bed, fell from 7th floor of hospital and died

A male patient, who fled from his bed at a private hospital in Mulikbazar in the central part of the city and sat on the edge of a cornice on the seventh floor for more than two hours, collapsed and was seriously injured on Saturday. Gaya, a police police officer said.

Sujit had entered the cornice through a gap in the glass window in the officer ward where he was undergoing treatment at the Institute of Neuroscience. He then sat precariously on the sidelines as worried onlookers watched and fire brigade, police and hospital officials tried to bring him down.

The officer said that he fell at around 1:10 pm and hit the cornice of the ground floor at least twice before landing on the ground. A hospital official said he was “very seriously injured” and his skull, rib cage and left arm were badly damaged.

The police officer said that the patient appeared to have stood on the cornice and was trying to climb down after seeing the disaster management personnel laying a net on the ground. But his hand slipped and he fell.

The police officer said the hydraulic ladder that was brought to the spot could not be used as the officer threatened to jump when he was brought near to remove it. He had earlier ignored the pleas of hospital staff and firefighters to return to the ward.

A crowd gathered in front of the hospital to catch a glimpse of the man and many urged him to move away from the spot. The mob affected vehicular movement on one side of the busy AJC Bose road. The officer’s family had earlier tried to reason with him and cried seeing him fall. The hospital closed its main gate after the incident.

At first the hospital staff placed sofas, cushions and other soft materials on the ground near the building but the patient fell to the ground.
