KOLKATA: A woman in her 50s, sat on the edge of Zeerut bridge near Alipore zoo, for almost an hour as Kolkata Police officials sat close to her on the road and engaged her in talks for more than 45 minutes before they were able to pull her back.
The incident was a sharp reminder of an incident two months back when a 36-year-old jumped from the 8th floor cornice of a hospital in Mullickbazar after sitting on the ledge for two hours. There too cops had tried to talk him out discouraging him to jump but had failed.
On Thursday, however, a motorist was first to notice the woman sitting on the ledge of the 93-year-old iron bridge and he subsequently alerted cops at the crossing in front and almost immediately cops posted near Taj Bengal and Alipore zoo came in to her rescue. Has she jumped she would have fallen atleast 40 feet below on the Tolly Nallah running below.
“The woman was sitting dangerously at the edge of the bridge and threatened to jump if we go any closer to her. She was saying she had lost the charm to live and wanted to end her life. We kept talking to her and offered her water and food and kept her engaging in conversation till we found an opportune moment to go closer to her and pull her back on the road,” said Amit Shaw, a traffic sergeant who was part of the rescue operation.
The woman, who hasn’t told her address or whereabouts of family members to cops till late on Thursday, was taken to SSKM Hospital for treatment and counselling.
“We are glad that we could save a precious life,” said an official of Alipore police station.
