Madikeri: Virajpeti Kodav Samaj in Kodagu The district has banned cake cutting and champagne drinking at weddings and other celebrations, which it says is not part of the Kodava culture.
The society has also said that the groom should not have a beard. Non-traditional performances are a strict no-no from now on during weddings and community gatherings.
Weddings and other functions should be finished by 10 pm to save the public from trouble, the society said, adding that the relevant resolutions were passed unanimously during its 99th general body meeting on Sunday. It was presided over by Chairman Vanchira Nanaiah and attended by 15 directors and 357 members.
The major decisions are: The groom’s face should be clean shaven; Women who bless the newlyweds should not leave their hair loose; not bursting crackers during Ganga Puja; no uncorking of champagne; No cake cutting; no shower of petals; no game’Devata‘Tune by the drummers of the Nadaswara troupe.
If Kodava girls marry boys from other communities, the latter should not be allowed to wear Kodava attire and the bride’s mothers should not have ‘pathak’ jewelery on them.
