Varanasi: Now the knitted QR code and logo will tell the identity of the original Banarasi sarees.
a research team in mechanical Engineering Department (industrial Management) Of Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) has developed a new technology in handloom sarees which has inbuilt woven QR code which includes details of saree, handloom mark logo, silk mark and Banaras Geographical Indication.Give) Logo.
Research work was done by IIT (BHU) and Angika Cooperative Society for confidence-building measures using QR codes and logos on sarees in the handloom industry. According to the researchers, the inbuilt weaving logo in the saree will attest to the purity of the handmade handloom saree. This will give confidence to the customers to choose the right handloom saree and prevent misuse of handloom and its products.
Pro. Prabhas Bhardwaj said that Varanasi handloom industry will have to adopt a modern approach. At present most of the customers have mobile phones. With the launch of Digital India campaign, people are getting more used to technology. “As per the study done by our research scholar, this industry has huge potential to include IT based applications. Presently, our research team has come up with QR code technology and logo weaving on sarees,” he said, adding that manufacturers can weave QR codes on sarees with details of their firm and manufacturing. Whenever the customer wants to know about a product He has to use the scanner in his mobile to know about the same. He will enter all the details in the QR code, such as the location of the manufacturer, date of manufacture etc. These measures will create confidence among the customers and increase the sales. It will happen, he said.
His research scholar M Krishna Prasanna Naik, working on the development of the Banaras handloom industry, said that the Banaras handloom industry is facing several issues, including marketing as a major. According to her study, most of the customers are not aware of the difference between saree made from handloom and powerloom. Only a limited number of customers know about Handloom Mark and GI Mark. Their study also reveals that customers are unaware that sellers provide genuine handloom marks or duplicate handloom marks with products. Hence, he got the idea of sarees with logo and QR code.
He told that the length of the fully designed saree is 6.50 meters which includes 1 meter blouse piece. After the saree part is completed, a section of 6-7 inches of plain cloth before the blouse is knitted. This patch contains the QR code and the other three logs. By applying these logs in place, the strength and style of the fabric will not be reduced and the look of the saree will be retained.
The idea was first implemented by Amresh Kushwaha, president of the Angika Cooperative Society, and Angika, a Varanasi-based designer. He said that in the absence of proper use of GI markings and handloom markings, customers are not sure about the originality of handloom weaving. “So, we are trying to incorporate this QR code and handloom mark log in our sarees. This will help our local and foreign customers to differentiate between handloom products and powerloom products,” he said and added that the team has successfully created a saree with inbuilt QR code and handloom mark logo.
