‘KL Rahul Have Gone Into a Shell; Shubman Gill Needs to Play Consistently Across Formats’: Former India Spinner

the former India Cricketer Maninder Singh has advised flamboyant opener KL Rahul to bat fearlessly in white-ball cricket to show his class. Rahul has been under a lot of questions after his poor performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup where he failed in crucial matches against Pakistan, South Africa and England (in the semi-finals). The 30-year-old didn’t look his best as he struggled to get going in the early overs, which resulted in India failing to get off to a brisk start in the powerplay.

Rahul was injured during this year’s IPL and was ruled out of crucial series against South Africa, England and West Indies after the cash-rich league. Although he was back in the team on the Zimbabwe tour.

He played some impressive innings in the run-up to the T20 World Cup but struggled on bouncy Australian pitches.

While Maninder suggested that even a vice-captain could be dropped from the team for failing to perform.

“KL Rahul has gone into a shell since the Zimbabwe series. He has to come out of this because we know what a classy cricketer he is. You cannot use the first 5-6 overs in ODI cricket. He needs to adopt a fearless attitude in T20 and ODI cricket. Maninder said in a media interaction organized by Soni, even if you are the vice-captain, you can be dropped Play Network ahead of the ODI series against Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Maninder is impressed with the emergence of young opener Shubman Gill, who has been a consistent performer in ODIs this year. The veteran spinner feels India should accommodate Shubman in all the three formats as he has a fearless approach to take on the opposition.

“Shubman Gill looks like a different player than others. He needs to play consistently for India in all formats as he has done well in Test, ODI and even T20 cricket whenever he got the chance. You should open with him in white-ball cricket and keep him at No.3-5 in the middle order in Tests. She has that fearless approach which is required to move forward,” Maninder said.

However, Shubman is not a part of India’s ODI series against Bangladesh as he will return to the squad for the crucial Test series.
