Strength: Unlike some new teams, KKR have a solid core, which means this team will not need off-field sessions just to play together. People like Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy, Pat Cummins, Andre Russell have spent a lot of time together in UAE. Apart from this, skipper Shreyas Iyer came into the team with tremendous form. He recently scored three consecutive half-centuries against Sri Lanka. Besides that, he is a pure captaincy material, taking Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in 2019 and the finals in 2020. Also, they have two attacking spinners in Chakraborty and Narine who will make it count on Indian pitches.
Weakness: This is batting. There is a dearth of young Indian talent in a league like IPL. Barring Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana, the middle order does not have the strength. Names like Rinku Singh, Abhijit Tomar and Pratham Singh do not inspire confidence at all. If we look at the top, Alex Hales would have been a really good bet, replacing him with the ineffective Aaron Finch might not be the ideal deal here. Moreover, the presence of Test experts like Ajinkya Rahane, who was bought very late on the day of the auction, is proof that he can spend his nights on the bench. Umesh Yadav brings nothing but mentorship to the board. Senior foreign players Tim Southee and Mohammad Nabi are no longer at their peak. With only four foreigners available, it’s hard to imagine where these giants would fit in.
