Kin of personnel on Odisha pole duty dying due to violent attacks, Kovid-19 will get Rs 30 lakh compensation

Less than a month before rural elections to be held in mid-February, the State Election Commission (SEC) increased ex-gratia for the families of poll workers who died or were injured during elections.

The SEC on Tuesday said that the next of kin of polling personnel who died due to COVID-19 due to violent attacks or in the line of duty during the upcoming Odisha Panchayat elections will get Rs 30 lakh as compensation. Less than a month before rural elections to be held in mid-February, the State Election Commission (SEC) increased ex-gratia for the families of poll workers who died or were injured during elections.

The revised ex-gratia amount will be applicable in the upcoming elections including rural elections and by-elections. In a circular, the SEC said that if a poll worker is killed due to violent attacks or bomb blasts or IED blasts during elections, he will be given Rs 30 lakh as compensation.

This amount was earlier Rs 20 lakh in the 2017 panchayat elections and 2019 general elections. It said that the next of kin of on-duty personnel who died due to other reasons would get Rs 15 lakh as compensation. On-duty personnel suffering from permanent disability like loss of limb or vision in violent armed attacks will get Rs 15 lakh, while those suffering from permanent disability due to other reasons will get Rs 7.5 lakh. The previous amounts were Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively.

The SEC said that a maximum of Rs 2 lakh will be paid to on-duty personnel seriously injured and suffering multiple fractures due to temporary and prolonged disability due to accidents or other reasons. It said that the kin of polling personnel who died due to COVID-19 would get Rs 30 lakh as compensation, while cashless medical treatment would be provided to the personnel who got infected in the line of election duty. The death certificate specifying the cause of death should be issued by a medical officer and countersigned by the concerned CDMO specifically mentioning that the death was due to COVID-19. It said that strict action would be taken against the officers for whom there is delay in payment of ex-gratia amount.
