Kerala’s daily spike remains above 50K mark as state reports 50,812 new COVID cases

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing spike in Covid cases, Kerala reported 50,812 fresh infections on Saturday, taking the tally to 59,31,945. The state also reported eight new fatalities pushing the Covid toll to 53,191.

According to the data released by the health department, 47,649 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours and the active caseload stood at 3,36,202.

“Kerala has 3,36,202 active Covid-10 cases, of which only 3.4 per cent are admitted in hospitals,” the state health department was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

As per the data, out of the total infected patients, 4,98,406 persons are under observation, out of which 11,658 are in isolation wards of various hospitals across the state.

Among the districts, Ernakulam tops the Covid chart with 11,103 cases, followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 6,647 and Kozhikode with 4,490 infections.

Of the fresh cases reported on Saturday, 208 had entered the state from outside, while another 46,451 had come in contact with infected persons. Out of the total infected, 402 are health workers and the source of infection of 3,751 patients is yet to be ascertained.

Among the Covid-related deaths, the southern state reported 94 deaths in the last few days, while 311 were designated as Covid deaths after appeals to the Supreme Court and the state government’s new guidelines.

On Friday, the southern state had reported 54,537 infections and 51,739 infections a day earlier. Kerala reported 55,475 new cases on January 25, the highest single-day jump in cases since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.
