Kerala’s Covid cases surge again: 1,544 new infections today; government on alert

Kerala again recorded over 1000 fresh Covid-19 cases on Saturday for the fifth consecutive day, as the state reported 1,544 new infections. With this, the number of active patients in the state increased to 7,972, after which state Health Minister Veena George called a high-level meeting to assess the situation. Notably, Kerala contributed more than half of all COVID cases in India on Saturday.

After the meeting, George said the health department is closely monitoring the situation and there is no new appearance, news agency PTI reported. “Analytically monitoring the situation closely. There is no new variant. It is the Omron version as of now. The health department is doing genomic and spike protein sequencing,” the minister said.

George said there was no need to worry and urged everyone to wear masks and get vaccinated.

The high-level meeting noted that Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam districts had the highest number of cases and the district authorities were directed to conduct more tests.

“Even though all people above the age of 18 have received the first dose of vaccine, 88 percent of the second dose immunizations in the same age group. So far, 22 percent have taken the precautionary dose. Vaccines will be ensured for all students,” the minister said in a release later.

The state had recorded 1,197 new positive cases and five deaths on May 31. On June 1, the state recorded 1,370 cases and six deaths, while on June 2 there were 1,278 new cases and 20 COVID-19 related deaths. On June 3, 1,465 new cases were reported and 13 deaths were reported.

Kerala’s COVID-19 dashboard shows that 65,63,910 confirmed cases and 69,790 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in the state so far.
